Zeelander Yachts’ deliveries to date are all sub-superyacht dayboats. So, it was simply a matter of time before the Dutch builder took a big step up in size. Its new flagship, the Zeelander 8 yacht, strikes a balance between being a crew-run cruiser for longer trips and a simply fun, yet more sophisticated, day and island hopper. Her interior, recently unveiled, is just as sophisticated, yet practical for modern-day families.
Staying true to her family roots, the 78-footer (24-meter) has curvy, classic styling from the drawing boards of Cor D. Rover. She further emphasizes outdoor living, with big seating areas fore and aft for conversations, cocktails, and enjoying the ride. (That ride, by the way, translates to speeds approaching 40 knots, depending on the Volvo Penta engine package you select.) The Zeelander 8 yacht continues the family look and feel inside the main deck, with an open-plan layout, massive skylight, and curved glass all around (below). The sensation is almost like being outside.
Understated, casual elegance is a good way to describe the interior. Grey-tone linens, diamond-stitched creamy leathers, and macassar ebony laminate set the backdrop to your cruises with family or friends. The laminate, along with hand-painted macassar ebony effects outside, are purposeful choices. “The low maintenance requirements ensure that the boat spends more time in use and less time on the dock,” says Zeelander founder Sietse Koopmans.
Whether you prefer helping yourselves to snacks and drinks or are owner-operators, the open plan means basic galley equipment is all readily accessible, to starboard. “Basic” doesn’t mean “threadbare,” though. Exactly what you need is present, avoiding overkill and clutter.
The same décor treatments flow down below into the three staterooms, including your full-beam master suite. Notably, the tones and textures characterize the two crew cabins, too. Not only that, but they’re each en suite cabins, a rarity in any size. Furthermore, the crew have a mess area, along with a cooktop.
As mentioned, the Zeelander 8 yacht should hit spirited speeds approaching 40 knots. With the optional engine package, 26 knots of cruising speed should permit a 475-nautical-mile range. That’s plenty to get from Palm Beach—a popular Florida home for Zeelanders—to the Bahamas for a few days. Range exceeds 1,000 nautical miles, meanwhile, at a dialed-back 7 knots. Zeelander says sound levels should be moderate as well, less than 72 decibels at cruise. Generally speaking, that level is about the equivalent of listening to chamber music in a small auditorium.
Hull number one, with a tender garage, is under contract and in build at Zeelander’s recently expanded operations in The Netherlands. Launch should take place around summertime.
