Zwijnenburg Yachting may be an unfamiliar name to many superyacht owners and their representatives, but they’ve surely seen the yard’s work. It’s a longtime hull and superstructure subcontractor for fellow Dutch shipyards. The family-run shipyard has its own yacht in the making now. The Atla Yachts Explorer 150, featuring a diesel-electric propulsion system capable of using biofuel instead, leverages the yard’s experience while welcoming customers’ customization requests.
Nearly two dozen megayachts of at least 279 feet (85 meters), both power and sail, have gotten their starts at Zwijnenburg Yachting in recent years. Among the major Dutch builders it supports are Oceanco and Feadship.
While the Atla Yachts Explorer 150 is far smaller, at nearly 149 feet (45 meters), she is for no less long-distance travel. In fact, the builder and its exterior-design partner, Sweden-based Mannerfelt Design Team, envision her visiting areas where the super-size superyachts cannot access. With an anticipated 4,000-nautical-mile range at 9 knots, abundant destinations are within reach.
While that range comes from a customary diesel-electric propulsion system, biodiesel like HVO can go in the tanks rather than diesel. Notably, engine manufacturers and naval architects all agree that HVO results in no real loss of power or speed. Plus, carbon dioxide emissions drop dramatically, as much as 90 percent for some yachts. Especially important for ultra-environmental-minded clients, Zwijnenburg Yachting says methanol or fuel-cell technology is a further possibility. Yet another possibility: installing solar panels on the sundeck roof glass.
Regardless, the shipyard and its design partners are sourcing as much as possible with sustainability in mind. This extends to the interior, which is of course available for personalization. (The Atla Yachts Explorer 150 is semi-custom.) To give interested parties an idea of what’s possible, the suggested layout includes a main-deck master suite and five guest staterooms below decks. A gym is also aboard, capable of being bigger for those of you who want a spa area or just more workout space. An open, central stairway connects all the decks, too.
Out on deck, meanwhile, more in-demand amenities characterize the usable space. For example, a big pool occupies the aft main deck. Just aft of and below it, a toy garage can accommodate two PWCs and a tender to 23 feet (7 meters). The bridge deck reserves an area aft for alfresco dining, while cocktails and sunning are the main activities on the sundeck.
To be run by a crew of nine, the Alta Yachts Explorer 150 is for sale exclusively through Y.CO. Construction should take two and a half years. That allows taking delivery in 2026 if contract signing occurs this year.
