Sometimes words from other cultures sum up yacht owners’ ideas perfectly. The Danish word hygge (pronounced “hyoo-guh”) means celebrating the small, good moments of life together with those you love, typically in a warm, cozy environment. The newly launched yacht Hygge, from MCP Yachts in Brazil, is for the same thing, just on the water.
Hygge went by the code name Seaview 40M project during construction. The owner commissioned her so that he and his large family could spend a lot of quality time together. In fact, his exact words were, “that’s what we want with our whole family and nothing less, having the time of our life onboard.” Big volumes and big spaces for socializing and relaxing were therefore important. Notably, the 133-footer (40.7-meter) is the largest-volume megayacht constructed in Brazil to date. Her gross tonnage is 380.
MCP’s engineering department partnered with the Dutch naval-architecture studio Vripack to ensure the owner’s needs could be met. MCP Yachts and Vripack already had collaborated on a number of projects, but still, the yacht Hygge presented challenges. For instance, 18 people, including the owner, needed staterooms. “Creating maximum space value on a 40-meter required a creative approach to space planning,” explains Bart Bouwhuis, Vripack’s co-creative director. The solution they came up with involves two VIPs below decks, plus two more VIPs and two twins amidships on the main deck. The master suite, meanwhile, is the majority of the upper deck, including a balcony.
Clearly, crewmembers—10 of them—needed good spaces and all-deck access, too. Since the two below-deck VIP suites sit to starboard, the full port side is for crew-service areas like the laundry and galley. The crew further have dedicated stairways along the port side—as the guests and owner do on the starboard side.
Additionally, the all-aluminum yacht Hygge treats guests to some great areas to get together and enjoy the scenery. For example, and fittingly for the code name Seaview, her skylounge has floor-to-ceiling, extra-wide glass windows. The main deck does, too. When the 133-footer arrives at an anchorage, the family will put the wood-lined beach club to good use.
Sea trials should confirm a 19-knot maximum speed. Delivery will follow before the end of the summer.
