Premiering at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival, the Sanlorenzo SL86A yacht at first glance looks like a traditional flying-bridge boat. But she’s actually quite the opposite. She’s the latest megayacht model from the Italian builder to feature asymmetrical decks, purposely to push out usable relaxation space yet keep foot traffic flowing.
The “A” in “SL86A” actually stands for “Asymmetric.” Like her predecessors, which include the Sanlorenzo SL106A and the SL96A, she’s full beam to port. A customary side deck still remains to starboard. However, that doesn’t mean crew or guests are incapable of accessing anything to port. The flying bridge has both port and starboard side decks, each leading down to the bow chill-out zone and anchoring gear. Additionally, hidden stairs lead from the aft deck to the flying bridge.
The guiding principle behind making the Sanlorenzo SL86A yacht asymmetric was to maximize owners’ and guests’ enjoyment outside and inside. The main aft deck, for instance, undoubtedly will be the breakfast and lunch spot, and even an afternoon and evening hang-out spot. It looks and feels bigger without a stairway interrupting the views. Further to that point, a glass bulkhead rimming the aft edge of the deck opens up more views of anchorages and the horizon.
Inside the Sanlorenzo SL86A yacht, meanwhile, the effect is more noticeable. Full-height walls of glass to each side bring in the surroundings, making guests feel more united with them by letting them stand practically at the edge of the left side of the yacht. In combination with separating the interior dining area from the lounge area—dining is in a separate area forward—relaxation is the order of the day.
The décor certainly helps, too. Zuccon International Project works with each customer to tailor interiors to their tastes. However, since so many people are prioritizing natural woods and stones, they may want to emulate the looks of hull number one, shown here. The studio chose untreated wood, along with hemp, jute, linen, and silk fabrics. Furthermore, recycled and recyclable materials appear throughout the soothing, calming atmosphere.
In fact, Zuccon International Project’s approach adheres to the archaic design trend appearing in home décor, too. It emphasizes employing materials in their natural, even raw, forms as much as possible. Essentially, it’s a deeper connection with the earth. Just what cruising is all about, too.
