Talk about a long haul: Meet Maverick, an intrepid 95-footer, which towed her ever-trusty “tender,” a 38-sportfisherman named Wrangler, all over the globe.
Really.
No yacht-transport ship needed–or wanted–here, Maverick, built by Kuipers Shipyard in Holland, is a Doggersbank design, one of about 500 to date from the drawing boards of Vripack Naval Architects. Doggersbanks are salty and even shapely, featuring round-bilge hulls and flared bows and meant for serious bluewater cruising. Maverick certainly proved her mettle in that regard. Powered by twin 385-hp Caterpillars, she towed the 12-ton Wrangler over more than 30,000 nautical miles, starting out in Florida, continuing on through the Panama Canal, then making a pit stop in the Galapagos Islands. French Polynesia, Fiji, and New Zealand were next, before ending in Australia, along the Great Barrier Reef. While clients who enjoy adventure–particularly those who own a Doggersbank design–don’t raise an eyebrow at Vripack, this marked the first time the design team had heard of any yacht undertaking such a trip.
And Maverick‘s not done yet. Did I happen to mention she’s presently en route to California?
