Pendennis Shipyard has two reasons to celebrate in 2008: This year marks its 20th anniversary as well as the inauguration of The Pendennis Cup superyacht regatta.
Based in Falmouth, England, Pendennis entered the megayacht-construction business with the contract for the 125-foot ketch Taramber. Since then it’s built and/or refit more than 100 yachts. In fact, it refitted and lengthened Adela, restored the famed yachts Shamrock V and Fair Lady, and built the innovative motorsailer MITseaAH (considered innovative due to her ability to hit mid-20-knot speeds under power, quite swift).
To celebrate its accomplishments, the yard is hosting several events throughout the year, including The Pendennis Cup. The race will be hosted jointly by the Port of Famouth Sailing Association and held as part of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, which is from August 9 to 16. Apparently the owners of several yachts have already expressed interest: You might just see Lulworth, Cambria, and Mariquita in attendance among the 20 expected to participate.
The Pendennis Cup entrants will receive complimentary berths at Port Falmouth Marina, which is opening this summer. (In fact, the race will be the first big event held there, preceding the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta by about a month.) Port Famouth will have dedicated megayacht pontoons with 1-meter-high (about three-foot-high) freeboard and six-meter draft.
