Add one more location to the handful that Lürssen has so far in Germany. According to a report on the German website THB.info, Lürssen will officially take over Detlef Hegemann Rolandwerft shipyard as of June 1. Part of the Hegemann Group of companies, Rolandwerft has been building merchant ships for about two decades. It’s located in Berne, not far from Lürssen’s Bardenfleth location (other locations are Lemwerder, Aumund, Wilhelmshaven, and Rendsburg.)
The Rolandwerft facility offers a few advantages, such as three construction sheds, an outfitting quay, a Syncrolift, and two 50-ton-capacity cranes. It’s also said to have sophisticated automated welding systems within its construction sheds. The maximum LOA built here has been 140 meters, or 459 feet.
That size range is certainly within Lürssen’s comfort zone. Al Salamah and Rising Sun are each just shy of that length, for example. Similarly large yachts have emerged from its sheds, like the 110-meter (361-foot) Darius, and/or are in the build process.
The 130 employees at Rolandwerft will reportedly be retained. According to THB.info’s report, Dieter Brammertz, chief executive of the Hegemann Group, was pleased with the job security. The same holds true for Jörg Bode, minister for Lower Saxony, the region where the yard is located.
When reached for comment, Lürssen had no official statement to make.
UPDATE, May 6: Lürssen issued the following statement this morning:
The sales contract between Lürssen and the Hegemann- werft group is perfect:
As of 1st of June, Lürssen takes over the business operations of the Rolandwerft, which is by majority a daughter company of the Peene-Werft in Wolgast (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). This was agreed upon at the end of last week by the board of directors at Lürssen and the Rolandwerft, with the assistance of the trustee management of the Hegemann-Werft group. The most important result: All 130 Jobs including the 9 apprenticeship positions at Roland are safeguarded.
This good news was announced by the Buyer and the Seller in a combined statement.
With the Rolandwerft, the Lürssen group with its head-office in Bremen-Vegesack gains one further site. The strong points of the Rolandwerft are the three building sheds equipped with modern welding technology, as well as a boat-lift with side and parallel track systems and a lifting capacity of more than 4.000 tons for ships up to 140 m in length. In addition there is a quayside with two berthing places at shore side equipped with two 50-t-quay side cranes and one 8-t-towercrane. Over the last two years 10 cargo vessels ranging in size of up to 1.000 TEU have been build there.
