The 52 Steel isn’t the only thing new at Sanlorenzo. The builder is leasing space from another nearby yard to handle construction of its metal megayachts.
The image here is one of the first two hulls of the 52 Steel series. (LOA: 171 feet, or 52 meters.) The largest megayachts thus far from Sanlorenzo, the duo were transferred from the builder’s longtime facilities in Viareggio, Italy to Cantieri San Marco, located in La Spezia. Sanlorenzo is using a new shed at that yard for now on to not just build, but also refit metal megayachts.
The sizes will range from 131 to 262 feet (40 to 80 meters, respectively). In fact, later this month, Sanlorenzo will send additional new builds to join the 52 Steel yachts there. The third and fourth hulls in the 460Exp series, Sanlorenzo’s long-range explorer-like series, are set to be transferred. Eventually, the 46 Alloy megayachts and 46 Steel yachts will be entirely built in La Spezia as well.
This is not to imply that the Viareggio yard is shutting down. Rather, Sanlorenzo is shifting its focus solely to fiberglass megayachts. The SD 112, SL 118, and SD 126 models can now occupy all of the floor.
Sanlorenzo has yet another yard, in Ameglia, that is unaffected by the changes. It builds the fiberglass models up to 106 feet (32.3 meters). These are the SL 78, SL 86, SL 96, and SL 106, plus the SD 92 series.
