If there’s a budding designer or architect in your household, listen up. Baglietto wants to see his or her ideas for a traveling exhibition space that promotes the shipyard’s nearly 170-year history. The Baglietto design competition comes with a cash prize of €15,000 (about $16,950 at press time), too.
For this initiative, Baglietto has partnered with Young Architects Competitions (YAC). This Italian association promotes contests for up-and-coming designers, whether they’re still students or graduates. Baglietto’s storied history in yachting, especially as an Italian shipyard, inspired the idea. “The over-a-century-old history of our shipyard is a precious heritage, not only for our company, but I dare say—confident that no one can deny this—for Italy as a whole,” asserts Diego Michele Deprati, Baglietto’s CEO. Indeed, Baglietto is older than many yacht builders in its home nation. Furthermore, it’s among the oldest shipyards in the world. Pietro Baglietto established the yard to build fishing boats, but soon included pleasureboats
The exhibition space is really a traveling “nautical micro museum,” in the words of YAC. Specifically, three 39-foot-long (12-meter-long) containers will house the museum. Baglietto and YAC want it to adapt to different settings to present Baglietto’s history, as well as its future. Raffaella Daino, Baglietto’s head of marketing and communications, notes that “modern ‘edutainment’ techniques” are important for the mini museum. “This will create physical or virtual immersive contexts to make visitors experience the quality and magnificence of Baglietto’s ships,” she explains.
The Baglietto design competition affords designers access to a wide variety of historic records to incorporate. For instance, drawings, patents, and scale models are available. Vintage photos, such as the ones here, are available, too. The topmost image is Baglietto’s exhibit at the 1962 Genoa boat show. The second photo, meanwhile, is from 1911, of the steam yacht belonging to the renowned composer Giacomo Puccini. Of course, the Baglietto design competition provides access to images and other materials related to Baglietto’s current production as well.
The €15, 000 cash prize gets split among three top winners. An international jury, including Francesco Paszkowski of Francesco Paszkowski Design, will review the entries. “Our ultimate goal is to reach out to all those who love our brand, but also and foremost to the younger generations,” Deprati explains. “Past, present, and future ideally stand together.”
The Baglietto design competition deadline is May 18. Winners will be announced on June 17. See the YAC website (link below) for full details on how many winners can qualify and what they will receive.
