Sailing enthusiasts stick with sailing yachts, typically. Except in the case of a particular Italian couple who have owned three high-profile sailing superyachts. They watched Mabelle, the fourth Sherpa 80 XL motoryacht, lower into the water at Arcadia Yachts earlier this month. Mabelle is their first power project.
It was quite the occasion for these owners, as well as the shipyard’s management team and the craftspeople who built the yacht. The owners previously cruised extensively aboard the sailing superyachts Kokomo, Zefira, and Ribelle. Kokomo initially launched in 2009, plus was the largest of the three, at 192 feet (58.4 meters). Zefira came next, in 2010. LOA: 163 feet (49.7 meters). Ribelle, meanwhile, was the smallest. Splashing in 2017, she came in at 107 feet (32.64 meters).
Since these owners thoroughly enjoy covering a lot of territory in their travels, the Sherpa 80 XL series suits them. Specifically, Arcadia Yachts says the Volvo Penta IPS 1350 propulsion system should permit more than 1,200 nautical miles at 10 knots. Mabelle also should see a top speed around 23 knots in good conditions. Even with the IPS system already being better in terms of fuel consumption than traditional diesels, the yacht further reduces diesel reliance thanks to solar panels. They reportedly produce 3 kW of energy, enough to power the air conditioning and other hotel loads.
The owners’ prior experience with fully custom yachts served them well this time around, too. Arcadia Yachts offers broad personalization throughout the Sherpa 80 XL series. For instance, the owner of hull number three requested five staterooms, plus an upper-deck galley. Mabelle’s owners selected four staterooms amid the 23 feet (7 meters) of beam. Additionally, they wanted a side-launching garage for the tender and watertoys. This therefore freed up the lazarete and deck areas among the overall total of more than 2,153 square feet (200 square meters) of interior and exterior space. Although photos aren’t available, the interior décor primarily uses hushed tones, keeping it from distracting from the scenery outside the large windows. Some of those windows, by the way, also open.
Opening glass is aboard elsewhere, too. Mabelle has a winter-garden arrangement on the aft deck, using sliding-glass doors. Heating or air conditioning can keep the area comfortable, making it usable all year long.
