The Darwin Class series from Cantiere delle Marche is surely known in explorer-yacht circles. Its handful of deliveries thus far have transited the Atlantic, more than once, and put thousands of miles under each of their hulls. Non-stop cruising is often on order, so technical know-how and creature comforts are each high priorities. Babbo, a Darwin Class 102, is the latest to follow suit.
At 244 gross tons, Babbo has better volume than similar-size offerings in the long-range motoryacht marketplace. She also has systems befitting a serious oceangoing cruiser, like independent rudders, and treatment systems for black water, grey water, and bilge oil. Also with steel plating thicker than other metal builders use, and further built to MCA standards, Babbo lends a true sense of sturdiness.
The South American owner of Babbo and his family have plans to stay aboard until the bitter end of the summer. They just took possession last month, heading across the Adriatic Sea from Cantiere delle Marche’s headquarters in Ancona, Italy. Croatia and Montenegro are the first focus, with Greece and Turkey coming later this season. Diving is a priority. The design and build teams fashioned handy pull-out hanging lockers for fins and deep drawers for bottle stowage, in fact. There are further handy stowage areas for folding bikes, SeaBobs, and more.
Not surprising, this onboard-all-the-time attitude is common among Darwin Class buyers. So, too, is their intention to have Babbo cross the Atlantic to spend the winter in warm island locales. None of these travels should pose a challenge. Cantiere delle Marche engineered her for a 4,700-nautical-mile range at 9½ knots.
Suitable for such adventures, the atmosphere aboard Babbo is friendly and welcoming, truly family-oriented. Entertainment is a priority for the owner, so the yacht can host a crowd of 30 across her decks. Normally, she accommodates 10 passengers, with six crewmembers.
