See Yacht Nixie Go From Concept to Completion in 3 Minutes: Sunday Superyacht Video

Forty-four months is a long time, but not out of the ordinary for a large custom superyacht’s construction. What is out of the ordinary, though, is seeing this same superyacht take shape in a little more than 180 seconds. Here, Lürssen takes us behind the scenes to see how the yacht Nixie progressed from her first steel plate cuts to delivery.

Those first cuts took place in November 2022, following another few years of in-depth design discussions and engineering decisions. Previously bearing the code name Project JassJ, the yacht Nixie is 336 feet (102.4 meters) in length. Interspersed with the inside-the-shipyard scenes are glimpses of the styling that RWD created for the owner. Gently rounded decks cascade down to the waterline, featuring capacious alfresco seating areas and sunning/social spaces like the pool area.

Typically, the most publicly available information for a megayacht goes toward lifestyle amenities like these. But, the shipyard footage reveals something equally important. For example, Lürssen employs modular construction. A practice long common for large commercial vessels and military ships, it means welders assemble multi-deck sections. Those sections in turn come together with the assistance of hefty overhead cranes. It’s a quicker and more efficient way of vessel construction, including large-superyacht construction, than completing the hull and continuing upward.

Once a yacht transfers to her outfitting shed, things seem to progress raplidly. The yacht Nixie marked that moment in time for the Christmas holidays in December 2023. Hull fairing, interior insulation, teak-deck laying, and more followed.

Equally chilly weather greeted the yacht Nixie for her formal launch in February of this year. As you watch her reach this and her final stages, take note of something equally significant. From Project 13785—her hull number—to Project JassJ and ultimately to christening as a charter yacht wrapping guests in wellness, Nixie required the hand-craftsmanship of hundreds of employees and subcontractors. Overall, the shipyard employs 990 direct manufacturing employees and 650 engineers.
