Galileo G marks the second ice-class expedition megayacht from Perini Navi Group’s Picchiotti shipyard.
Galileo G is a bit larger than the first motoryacht in the Group’s Vitruvius series. That launch, Exuma,, measures 50 meters (164 feet), while Galileo G is 55 meters (180 feet). She is engineered for globetrotting, especially in ice-laden waters. Galileo G meets ABS Ice Class IB regulations, which means she’s suitable for navigating Northern Baltic waters in winter. Her owner further intends to explore the Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. All of this required not just reinforcing her hull, especially the bow, but also ensuring systems could withstand extremely low temperatures.
One of those systems is especially noteworthy. A retractable ice detector notifies the captain in the wheelhouse of submerged or partially submerged objects. It has a range of more than 1 kilometer (more than half a mile).
While watertoys and icy waters don’t seem to mix, one of Galileo G’s toys is actually intended to see action in it. It’s a Zodiac Hurricane, a model typically used by military and law-enforcement officials in demanding conditions. The Zodiac comes with either a fiberglass or aluminum hull, so Galileo G’s owner opted for aluminum, further requesting it be reinforced. The other toys include kayaks, Laser dinghies, and a traditional 6.3-meter (21-foot) tender.
