If your cruising list still begins and ends in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, Asia-Pacific waters want to earn a place on it. Two organizations long promoting Australia and the South Pacific to international yacht owners are expanding that campaign significantly. In the coming months and years, yacht-show attendees can expect far more destination-specific intelligence on Asia-Pacific superyacht destinations.
The countries in question cover quite a big of nautical mile territory. Some are already growing in popularity, especially with Americans. They range from the Maldives on the western edge to Japan to the north and to Indonesia to the east. The rest of the countries are Malaysia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
It’s all due to the renewed focus of Superyacht Australia and the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association. The trade organizations have had presences at major yacht shows in Monaco, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach in recent years. Between owners and guests wanting to see more of the world and major developments in the countries they promote, the organizations believe the timing is right.
In fact, a meaningful buildup is occurring in regional Asia-Pacific superyacht infrastructure. In Bali, for example, the Bali Benoa Marina (above) is on track for a mid-2026 opening with 180 slips. More than 50 of those slips are for yachts to 295 feet (90 meters). The property will also have a mobile hoist for yachts to 200 tons and a fueling station. Crucially, local and national government officials want it to become the region’s yachting hub. They, and the marina’s developers, additionally see it as a logical jumping-off point for an archipelago that counts upwards of 17,000 islands.
The Maldives presents a different appeal entirely. Made up of 1,190 coral islands and 26 atolls, the country has a remarkable formation of over 3,000 coral reefs (below). The free-flowing tides of the monsoons have created one of the world’s richest diving areas. More than 1,000 species of fish inhabit Maldivian waters, including whale sharks on a scale unknown almost anywhere else. A dedicated superyacht marina in the Zamani Islands is now on the way, too. It will eventually offer 120 berths, with availability rolling out over the next few years
What has consistently distinguished this part of the world from other emerging regions, however, is the caliber of locally embedded expertise. Regional Asia-Pacific superyacht agents have long shared their first-hand knowledge of these cruising areas. Their offices spread across Indonesia, Malaysia, and beyond. In some cases, their teams include marine biologists who can walk owners and guests through the ecological significance of what they’re witnessing underwater.
For owners who have tired of the same itineraries year after year, the Asia-Pacific’s combination of scale, biodiversity, and expanding infrastructure makes a compelling case. Expect to hear more about it at this fall’s Monaco Yacht Show. Stateside, the next opportunity is March’s Palm Beach International Boat Show.
