The Ocean Alexander 120 is the flagship of the Taiwanese builder’s lineup. She’s also the first of its Megayacht Series. Unlike the smaller Ocean Alexanders, however, she’s built on U.S. soil. The 120 is constructed through a collaboration with Christensen Shipyards, due to the latter’s experience and reputation in the large fiberglass megayacht market. Ocean Alexander believed the American yard was a good match for its own purchasing power, given that it builds a good number of yachts each year. And, a good number of Ocean Alexander clients are American.
Since the first Ocean Alexander 120 debuted in 2012, the series has attracted good interest. And no wonder. Ocean Alexander and interior designer Evan K. Marshall gave equal, careful consideration to crew needs and guest needs. For example, there’s a sizable main-deck galley, complete with a dining/coffee nook, plus a crew galley and mess below decks. Few similar-size megayachts have full separate cooking facilities for crew. Marshall also designed the overall interior, with accommodations for 10, to be akin to that of a much larger megayacht.
A big appeal of the Ocean Alexander 120, of course, is the alfresco space. Here’s where the megayacht marks yet another departure from other builders’ models. The sundeck is a full deck, not a reduced-area perch. It also feels far larger than it is. The Ocean Alexander 120 has a hot tub forward (naturally flanked by sunpads), followed by a barbecue and dining area, and rounded out by loose lounges.
The Ocean Alexander 120 further challenges the notion of needing speed. Top end is around 15 knots, under MTU power. Most other offerings in this size range are closer to 20 knots. At 10 knots, the Ocean Alexander 120 reportedly sees a nearly 3,000-mile-range, too.
In this video, you’ll get a thorough tour of the tri-deck 120.
