Watching a regatta from land can be exciting… but not nearly as exciting as being aboard one of the competitors. And both pale in comparison to being above the competitors. Thanks to drone technology, the St. Barths Bucket’s 38 superb superyacht competitors are showcased in the video below like never before.
Certainly, helicopters have been used to shoot the race action. And, they continue to be used for many regattas. You can spy a helicopter in some of the scenes from the St. Barths Bucket, in fact. However, drones are catching on, for several reasons. As you’ll see, they can be flown far closer to the yachts. It would simply be too dangerous for a helicopter to try to get that close. Drones can also maneuver quicker and easier. Watch as during the St. Barths Bucket, the video team launches the drone straight up into the sky from right on deck.
To be clear, we believe there will always be a place for helicopters in regattas. Just take a quick glance at the photo above. It’s by the famed photographer Onne van der Waal, during a previous St. Barths Bucket, in fact. It’s a stunning moment frozen in time. Drones simply add another dimension, letting you experience the thrills a whole new way.
Watch and decide for yourself.
