Built in 2009, Elena is a 180-foot (55-meter) replica of a racing schooner delivered in 1911. The original Elena was designed by the renowned naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff. She won most of the early races she entered, handily beating the best of the American schooner fleet. Elena further went on to win the prestigious 1928 Trans-Atlantic Race. A modern-day yachtsman wanting a fierce competitor and competent cruiser commissioned Elena to be built all over again. She features Oregon pine and Alaskan Sitka spruce in her construction, built by Factoria Naval de Marin in Spain.
Elena wasted no time in heading out for her first race, either. Here, Delissa Needham, one of the UK’s top TV producers and journalists, tells the amazing story of Elena’s first-ever regatta. It was a head-to-head battle against a sistership. It nearly became disastrous, too: A crewmember fell overboard. You’ll also learn more about what led to the build of this sailing superyacht in the first place. It’s an outstanding mini-film, much more than a simple video.
After you watch, you might just be enticed to learn even more. Elena is available for charter, both traditional cruising trips and regattas. Visit her website for more on her accommodations and her dedicated crew. For charter details, contact Y.CO.
