Contemporary in style yet faithful to the Nautor Swan lineage, the first Swan 108 yacht, Fancy, lowered into the water in Finland this week.
Nautor Swan (which also now has a motoryacht division) revealed the design to customers in 2021. “Like a painter meticulously chooses his palette, we made a very intense research of talents that were able to put on the table their know-how and blend it with the others, to create a beautiful and unique product,” says Giovanni Pomati, Nautor Group’s CEO.
Those talents include German Frers, the renowned naval architect. In fact, Frers has been responsible for the naval architecture and engineering of every Nautor Swan project since the 1980s. To date, more than 700 launches bear his handiwork. For the Swan 108 yacht, it was important that she preserve the ability to race, being a Swan Maxi, while offering comfort for private voyages.
One of design’s new features—something no other Swan has—is a dual-acting transom door. Though seemingly minor, it’s actually a major design change. Firstly, it flips open and down, along with part of the aft deck, to create a big, open-air beach club. Secondly, it simplifies launching and retrieving the tender. Either way, the extra space has no bearing on Fancy’s interior volumes.
Another design change is the widening of coamings aft in the cockpit. This therefore allows pushing the steering stations outboard more, yet still provides protection for them.
Additionally, Lucio Micheletti of Micheletti + Partners is responsible for the new series’ styling. Here, too, it was important to cater to two concepts, those being Nautor Swan’s history and its modern-day clients. The studio manipulated proportions and aerodynamics in coming up with the coachroof’s shape. Ultimately, the studio chose one that lends the impression of being shaped by the wind.
The Swan 108 yacht series further features interior design by Misa Poggi, who previously designed other Swans, too. An extra-large companionway leads from the coachroof entry into the saloon. The idea is to make the aft deck and the interior lounge feel more connected. Offering a few design packages and themes, Poggi plays with light and dark tones to create different atmospheres.
If you’ll be attending the Monaco Yacht Show in September, you can book an appointment to tour the all-carbon-composite Fancy. She’ll make her global debut there.
In the meantime, Nautor Swan has hull number two under construction, among other sailing superyachts.
