Global organizations rely on the International Well Building Institute for assistance in creating spaces that prioritize people’s health and wellbeing. In fact, for the past decade, startups to Fortune 500 companies have relied on its WELL Building Standard (WELL). Well Yachts is bringing WELL to the superyacht sector, reportedly the first to do so.
In fact, Well Yachts’ entire purpose is to improve onboard health and wellbeing. Kelda Lay (pictured) is the founder, a WELL Accredited Professional. With upwards of 20 years’ experience in yacht design, Lay has been in discussions with the institute for the past two years. “Our commitment to health extends beyond aesthetics,” she explains. “It’s about creating a holistic environment that nurtures both body and mind.” Through Well Yachts, Lay continues, “you can be confident that your yacht’s space supports the health of all occupants.” The company is capable of assisting whether it gets involved in the early construction stage or when the yacht is already operating.
Yacht owners can pursue WELL programs centered around what is most important to them. The programs are based on points and tiered, relying on 10 evidence-based concepts. Air, light, and thermal comfort, for instance, are among the concepts. So, too, are sound, movement, and materials. Therefore, reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exposure might be of interest to some owners. As an alternative, or an addition, owners might focus on reducing exposure to the so-called forever chemicals, polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs).
Regardless, each yacht starts with an entry-level concept and continues building up points to achieve higher certification levels. Notably, Well Yachts says most superyacht owners can reasonably expect to accrue upwards of 40 points immediately out of 211 possible total points. Additionally, recertification opens the door to improving on a previously achieved points total.
“Our mission at Well Yachts is to guide yacht owners and operators on a journey towards enhancing their onboard environments,” Lay explains. “We are committed to being long-term partners in improving and maintaining these spaces.”
