Currently in the hands of just her sixth owners, a strikingly unusual megayacht is going up for auction next month. The five-decade-old is arguably one of the first purpose-built rugged explorers. She’s also the precursor to modern-day superyachts with larger-than-typical owners’ parties in mind.
The auction, online from June 8 to 10, is being run by Global Boat Auctions. “We are seeing increasing demand for longer-range, expedition-style with helipad yachts,” a spokesperson says. “Her age defines her as a classic.”

Astilleros y Talleres Celaya in Spain delivered the yacht Voyager in 1973, as Nefertitti, much the way she appears today. In fact, Sparkman & Stephens penned the exterior lines to mimic go-everywhere commercial vessels. At 201 feet (61 meters), she was even more eyebrow-raising, and not just in the 1970s. She remained one of the 10 largest private yachts worldwide straight through to 2002.
The aptly named Voyager is capable of carrying owners and guests to far reaches of the world, too. In fact, she has an 8,000-nautical-mile range at 10 knots. Cruising speed is slightly higher, 12½ knots, with the maximum speed being 17 knots. Additionally, and helpful for owners who want to fly in to remote anchorages, the superyacht has a certified helideck. It complies with Canadian Coast Guard standards.

Inside, the yacht Voyager continues to surprise, in a good way. Customarily, a private vessel of her LOA would have up to six staterooms. However, much like far bigger boats, she has 10 staterooms. She further allows the skylounge to convert into a second master suite, complete with an en suite bath. In total, 22 people in the owners’ party can cruise together, with 11 among the captain and crew.
Naturally, concerns about maintenance sometimes come with age. The current owners have had Voyager undergo regular maintenance and major refits over the past 17 years. For instance, an 18-month technical refit wrapped up in October 2020. Interior modifications occurred one year ago.

In-person viewings are available by appointment now through May 19, and again from May 25 to 28. The last viewing period is June 4 to 5. Voyager, being auctioned on a turnkey basis, has a current market value of €7.9 million.
