The moment a superyacht slips into the water is always exciting, but exciting just somehow never seems to be enough at CRN, where opera music additionally heralds the moment – Italian opera music, of course. The launching of Blue Eyes on May 9 followed suit: Just after the owner christened her in a sunset ceremony, the new 60-meter (196’9”) entered the water to stirring sounds from Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot.
To top it all off, blue confetti sprinkled down on the huge crowd – more than 1,000 people in total, representing shipyard workers, city officials from CRN’s home of Ancona, and diverse famous Italian business figures. The latter included designer Alberta Ferretti, cashmere manufacturer Brunello Cucinelli, and Socotherm chief Zeno Soave (Socotherm is one of the world’s largest suppliers of covering materials for piping used to extract and transport oil, gas, and water).
The blue-hulled Blue Eyes bears some exterior similarities to previous CRN megayachts, having been designed by Zuccon International Project. She features what’s arguably a favorite feature of many of the yard’s clients, a balcony off the owner’s suite. There’s also the “beach club,” another favorite, formed when a large portion of the transom lowers to be nearly flush with the water. Other CRNs have the interior area here fitted out with massage and spa facilities, but Blue Eyes’ owner requested it serve as a solarium and additional saloon, complete with lounge chairs and sofas.
As happy an occasion as it was, the launching of Blue Eyes was also poignant for CRN’s management and that of its parent company, the Ferretti Group. As Norberto Ferretti, president of the Group, said in his opening remarks, “This has definitely been a challenging year for our industry and our company, but things are already starting to look up, which gives us all the more reason to celebrate. Add in the fact that the owner of this new boat is a friend, and an Italian, and we all have reason to be immensely proud.”
