A few months ago Blohm + Voss unveiled the first in a series of proposals, the B+V 110 MY/fast. Now it’s unveiling what it calls the “ultimate SUV at sea,” the B+V 120 MY/X.
Measuring 124.2 meters (407 feet), this expedition yacht is intended to carry a good deal of exploration equipment as well as guests. In fact, the list of toys – ample-sized ones, too – that the 120 MY/X can carry is impressive. They include tenders from 5.5 to 16 meters (18 to 52 feet), a seaplane, an amphibian car, and an 8.5-meter (28-foot) submarine. Take a look at the illustrations here, particularly the sunset one below, and you’ll see a variety of them and their dedicated storage spaces. You’ll also see that, unlike most superyachts, the 120 MY/X can actually carry two helicopters. The primary helipad is aft, on the same deck as the owner’s suite, with a hangar beneath it. The second helipad toward the bow serves guests, as it’s on the same deck as two VIP duplex suites, the dining room, and the saloon. It also conveniently yields direct access into those gathering areas.
Gathering there or anywhere aboard the 120 MY/X should be plenty comfortable, given the 25.7-meter (84-foot) beam. Sixteen guests and the owners are treated to a bridge-deck saloon boasting 180-degree views, plus balconies on each side of the “guest deck,” which is where the above-mentioned VIP suites are. Six additional guest staterooms are on the main deck. Should they arrive by means other than helicopter, they can enter the 120 MY/X via the starboard-side main entry. Look amidships in either of the illustrations, and you’ll see a rounded, almost eye-like feature. Behind that is the entrance lobby, containing both a staircase and an elevator.

As you’d expect, the owners get a good deal of space devoted exclusively to them. In fact, part of their two-level suite occupies an entire deck, one level down from the bridge deck. The bedroom and two baths are on that upper section, all of which have good-size windows to take in the view. A private staircase leads down to a massage room, gym, and private saloon, with the saloon additionally leading out to a Jacuzzi at the bow. Anticipating that a buyer may want or need to conduct business aboard, Blohm + Voss says it can add an office with a separate meeting area here as well.
The crew – a total of 50 personnel – has dedicated stairwells and passageways so that they can go about their business, too. Blohm + Voss seems to anticipate technically experienced crewmembers being hired, as the propulsion system it proposes is diesel-electric, with eight 2,080-kW gensets. They power three 4,500-kW pod drives. The yard anticipates a top speed of 18.5 knots and a cruise of 16 knots, with range at that speed being 5,000 nautical miles.
Regardless of the speed, imagine the feeling while standing at the 120 MY/X’s viewing area in the peak of the bow, about 8.5 meters (28 feet) above the waterline. That will surely beat the two-level beach club or guest deck swimming pool.
