To address the affinity for retro designs, the founders of Strand Craft have created another megayacht brand, Grand Bay Yachts, which is offering the 100-foot Elegance model seen here as its first project.
To be built by Ned Ship Group in Antalya, Turkey—the same partner that Strand Craft has—the Grand Bay 100 Elegance will measure 100 feet LOA (30 meters). She’ll be constructed of carbon fiber and composite, to keep weight down and thereby allow good performance. Equipped with quadruple Volvo Penta IPS 1200s, the Elegance 100 is expected to top out at 32 knots and cruise at 20 knots. (If a quadruple engine setup sounds strange, recall that Volvo Penta’s IPS pod-drive units are far smaller than traditional inboard diesel engines.) Volvo Penta’s research shows that its units allow on average for a 30-percent lower fuel consumption and 40-percent better range in comparison to typical diesel power as well.
Kajan Yacht Design is responsible for the exterior design of the 22-foot-beam (6.8-meter-beam) boat. Kajan Yacht Design was founded by Mike Kajan, who has produced a variety of classic and contemporary power and sail designs over the past few years. Together, Kajan and Grand Bay Yachts are making the 100 Elegance available with a white hull as shown, or a blue hull, for even more classic appeal.
Inside, the general arrangement should also be appealing. The main-deck owner’s stateroom is forward as you’d expect, though the dressing area and en suite head are both down a few steps. This maximizes otherwise-wasted space. Three guest staterooms are below decks, bringing the total owner’s party to eight individuals. Besides the saloon, everyone can relax in the skylounge, an alfresco space fitted with a hot tub, bar, and seating area. Guests can also head forward into the wheelhouse and enjoy an observation settee.
Even though the Grand Bay Yachts 100 Elegance is a retro design, she makes concessions to modern-day desires. A prime one: a side balcony on the lower deck, leading to an inside beach club complete with hot tub and bar. It’s aft of the guest staterooms and straddled by the bunk crew cabin and the captain’s cabin. The balcony is a good spot to hop aboard a tender or don dive gear, too, which can be stowed nearby.
Then again, what would a classic-styled yacht be without an equally classic-looking toy? Grand Bay Yachts can optionally arrange the garage to hold a Morgan Aero SuperSports sportscar and a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
