Egg and Dart Design Corporation, known for its linear yacht designs, caught the attention of an unexpected build partner for the Ranger 58m expedition yacht shown here. It’s ISA, known for its sleek motoryacht designs. The design brief calls for a steel-hulled, intrepid explorer with high attention paid to creature comforts, especially ones emphasizing distinctive ways to enjoy out-of-the-way destinations.
The 190-foot design is still in the concept stage, but reportedly being considered by one or two owners. An Egg and Dart element that likely impressed them: the observation deck/flybridge. The uppermost deck aboard the Ranger 58m, it has indoor and outdoor observation lounges, whale watching areas, even a research area and a library. The goal is to let the owner and guests read up on the regions and wildlife they’ll see.
Should they want to indulge in close-up research, Egg and Dart designed the tender garage to handle a mini-armada of sea, air, and land craft. The Ranger 58m will have a draft of 12 feet (3.8 meters), so toys will play a major role in shallow anchorages. Besides accommodating a Novurania RIB, there’s room for two other tenders, two PWCs, a Lisa-Akoya lightweight amphibious airplane, a Mercedes Benz G Class offroading SUV, and four ATVs. Egg and Dart even suggests including snowmobiles. Of course, Egg and Dart also envisions the Ranger 58m having fighting chairs and diving gear.
Another distinctly different design element from Egg and Dart: the “chameleon deck,” a.k.a. the raised helipad aft. When the helicopter isn’t onboard, the deck can double as a driving range, a party deck, or a sunning space. Sore shoulders from practicing golf swings can get treated at the massage area on the main deck. Or, guests can take a dip in the indoor pool there, with sliding doors that make it more of an indoor-outdoor area.
Egg and Dart envisions several other attractive features for the Ranger 58m. The 39-foot (12-meter) beam should translate to well-arranged spaces for 12 in the owner’s party. The owner’s suite, on the upper deck, has two fold-down balconies, and there are single balconies in each of two extra guest staterooms up here. The four primary guest cabins are on the main deck. Much of the lower deck is devoted to crew spaces, including their cabins (for 15 crewmembers, with the captain on the upper deck), the galley, a laundry area, and stowage. It also houses the dive center, watersports area, a gym, and a sauna.
In keeping with environmental awareness, Egg and Dart and ISA are sourcing as many sustainable materials as possible for the interior design. In addition, the team will provide interested parties with machinery that reduces carbon emissions and related matters. For now, the specifications call for twin Caterpillar 3512B diesel engines, providing a top speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. The Ranger 58m will further meet Lloyds classification and MCA safety requirements.
