To be fair, The Wolf of Wall Street, hitting theaters in November, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Jonah Hill. But to those of us in yachting, the megayacht in The Wolf of Wall Street movie is the real star. She’s Lady M, and she plays the role of a well-known yacht from the 1990s, Nadine.
Nadine belonged to Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street stockbroker with a penchant for living life to excess. (Belfort once gave an interview in which he said one of his role models was the fictional character Gordon Gekko.) Belfort earned the nickname the “Wolf of Wall Street” and wrote a same-titled autobiography, the basis for the movie.
While you can see a few scenes with Lady M in the official movie trailer, this video shows much more of her. Apparently, someone affiliated with the film shot it, given how close he was and how much footage he obtained when Lady M was at New York City’s North Cove Marina last fall. On a side note, Luiz de Basto, who designed the yacht, says that the producers contacted him last year. The reason: “to ask for the plans of the boat so they could plan the camera placement for the scenes,” he explains.
Also incidentally, if you remember Nadine, you’re probably wondering how the megayacht in The Wolf of Wall Street movie could possibly be Lady M. An Intermarine delivery from 2002, Lady M is a good deal smaller: 147 vs. 167 feet, to be exact. To that, I say: When is the last time any Hollywood star played someone his or her true age? That’s filmmaking, kids.
The Wolf of Wall Street
The last few Scorsese pics left me a little disappointed. I had begun to think Marty had become a ‘gun for hire’ and that his brilliance may have been spent (his earlier works were some of the best movies ever made). I attended a screening of The Wolf of Wall Street this evening, and was expecting to be unimpressed. I am happy to say I was completely blown away. This pic is Marty at his best. I laughed, I cringed, I related (with fond memories as well as a bit of guilt) and I TOTALLY believed every unbelievable moment. A good book, a great screenplay and a delightful cast were formed and molded into what I believe should get Scorsese a best director Oscar, and likely a Best Picture Award for the movie. Leo DiCaprio has grown into a versatile actor and his creation of this super hero dirtbag’s roller coaster ride in this crazy (true) story is really honest and delightfully entertaining. Jonah Hill pulled out all the stops too and this is definitely his best work. Thank you Mr. Scorsese for delivering the goods so brilliantly!
