Between Derecktor Shipyards’ Derecktor Florida and Derecktor New York facilities, megayachts have been making for a busy start to 2015.
Eight megayachts alone pulled into Derecktor Florida for a variety of tasks between January and last month. They include La Pellegrina, from Couach Yachts; Inception, from Heesen Yachts; Te Manu, from Codecasa; Passion, from Swedeship; Lady Linda, from Trinity Yachts; Cracker Bay, from Hakvoort; Qing, from Cheoy Lee; and MITseaAH, from Pendennis. While Derecktor Florida performed typical maintenance or class-required survey work on these beauties, Qing (ex-Mazu) stands out for an ambitious trip she’s just embarked upon. The yacht left Fort Lauderdale a few days ago for the start of an around-the-world trip that will last three years. As part of the journey, Qing will also be delivering a variety of aid packages to global communities in conjunction with YachtAid Global.
Even though all eight yachts have now departed, Derecktor Florida remains busy. It’s partly due to a number of redesigns. Mirage, a Heesen, has been at the shipyard for several months, receiving a major restyling along with new engines and all new systems. She’s a 10 (the Oceanfast long known as Mystique) has been there a while, too, as has Areti, a Trinity, each getting a redesign.
Another Derecktor Florida project of note: the 118-foot, 1985-built Burger Twilight (pictured). She arrived in March for a repower. She was still equipped with her original engines, Detroit Diesel 12V92s, which have already been replaced with Caterpillar C32s. The latter meet current emissions standards. The original transmissions were also replaced. Other machinery-related work is still being performed. Derecktor Florida is additionally repainting Twilight’s hull bottom.
On an interesting side note, this isn’t Twilight’s first visit to Derecktor. She’s been there a few times. The first occurred about 20 years ago, under previous owners, when she was known as Silver Cloud. Between that time and a visit just a few years ago, when she gained zero-speed stabilizers and new hull paint, she grew about 15 feet.
As for Derecktor New York, the yard typically performs commercial work and smaller-yacht work. However, yet another Burger, this time the 112-foot Independence, is getting a repaint, extension of her transom, a hydraulic swim platform, and benchseating on the flying bridge.
