A Korean commercial shipyard and three American engineering and design studios are behind the first megayacht in an anticipated all-aluminum sport-yacht series for U.S. buyers. The Phoenix 130, in build on spec for launch next year, is the builder’s first foray into the megayacht market.
GHI Shipyard in South Korea has previously focused on ship building and repair, employing both steel and aluminum. As to why it is behind the Phoenix 130, and the subsequent Project Phoenix Series, “South Korea has impeccable quality while representing economies of scale,” says Joe Lazzara of Lazzara Ombres Architects. The design firm is one of the three American companies involved.
Joining Lazzara Ombres Architects are Bill Prince Yacht Design and Boksa Marine Design. Each played a role in getting the Phoenix 130 naval architecture and overall engineering to the point where construction could start. For instance, Nick Boksa of Boksa Marine Design oversaw ABS compliance for systems’ engineering. Boksa is further responsible for the configuration of machinery spaces. Ian Ombres of Lazzara Ombres Architects asserts, “We expect Phoenix 130 to be one of few ABS A1 commercial-classed yachts certified by ABS Houston in the last five years in this size range.” He points to ABS’ strict standards as a reason few comply.
Although the interior designer is not a household name, Alexandre Thiriat is plenty experienced in yachting. Specifically, for eight years, the French designer worked with Alberto Pinto. Thiriat was a project manager for megayachts such as Amevi, Alfa Nero, Katara, and Okto. For the Phoenix 130, his vision includes five staterooms for the owners’ party. Full-height glass in areas such as the saloon and formal dining area (above) should create a welcoming ambiance. Furthermore, a combination of dark and light woods and other materials add sophistication, while preserving a comfortable feel.
The Phoenix 130 is available for nearly $22 million, via Northrop & Johnson as central agent.
