Design studios face challenges with every yacht project. But, one that needs to suit a family’s private time aboard for months at a time is quite a task. Then consider marine researchers may come aboard, and the yacht may even host video editing and production teams. Design Unlimited had to keep all of these in mind for the interior of hull number one of the Arksen 85. Starting construction this summer, the megayacht further emphasizes naturally sustainable materials throughout the decor, as well as recycled materials.
Arksen is pushing the boundaries of exploration, building yachts to 98 feet (30 meters) capable of taking on harsh conditions. In addition, the Arksen 85 has a range upwards of 6,000 nautical miles on one tank of fuel. Accordingly, Design Unlimited wants the interior to adapt to ever-changing needs. With challenge number one—living aboard for months—the studio felt particularly tested. Stowage is a far bigger need, for instance, because of far longer stays. This impacts pantries, food prep and stowage, as well as garbage. So, the galley has two large, dedicated stowage areas for weeks away from land. Furthermore, it has a recycling stowage area. And, of course, it has a few stoves/ovens, freezers and refrigerators, and dishwashers.
Then, too, individual guests and crew have higher comfort and well-being needs. These latter factors required a lot of extra thought, according to Design Unlimited. The studio feels confident it came up with practical yet creative solutions for the Arksen 85. For instance, while the master stateroom has a walk-in closet, more lockers sit hidden behind it. This complements traditional solutions like under-mattress stowage and drawers in the bed’s base.
Since Arksen will have sustainable materials aboard all of its yachts, Design Unlimited sourced fabrics and accessories accordingly. Interestingly, all of the cushions, throws, and rugs were made with recycled plastic bottles. Upholstery, meanwhile, uses cotton fabrics with yards repurposed from the fashion industry. Overall, Design Unlimited and Arksen assert that a good deal of the interior can be recycled when the Arksen 85 is no longer usable. Similarly, the yacht herself reportedly can be repurposed.
We’ll have more on the Arksen 85 as construction starts.
