Alva Yachts is a new name in yachting. Its team intends to make the German builder a leader in electric-powered sailing yachts and catamarans. The first of its projects, the Ocean Eco 90, upholds the philosophy that greener and cleaner can still provide long range.
Already in build, the Ocean Eco 90 comes from cooperation with HennDesign for styling and iYacht for naval architecture. Both are additionally in Germany. The mega cat measures 90 feet (27.5 meters), and although the hull and superstructure are set, you can choose among three propulsion options. Understandably, Alva Yachts is offering an electric-drive system, two 500-kW units with a 360-kilowatt-hour battery bank. More than 2,153 square feet (200 square meters) of solar panels cover the superstructure. They feed the battery bank and therefore the electric drives, too. Two 100-kW diesel gensets are on hand, also to power up the batteries.
If you’re not quite ready for this arrangement, you have another choice. Alva Yachts has hybrid propulsion, featuring two diesel engines and two electric drives. No traditional diesel genset is needed, therefore. You still get the solar panels and batteries.
Interestingly, Alva Yachts has yet another option. The Ocean Eco 90 can rely on fuel-cell technology. Specifically, two hydrogen fuel cells can take the place of the typical diesel gensets. Just like the other two propulsion options, the solar panels and batteries remain.
No matter what you choose, Alva Yachts says in electric (battery-only) mode, the megayacht can cover 100 nautical miles. Finally, depending on the propulsion package, top speed should be 16 to 18 knots. Wherever you venture, the 3’9” (1.2-meter) draft will make shallow waters accessible. And, the 45’9” (14-meter) beam means there’s a good amount of space inside and on deck to enjoy.
Alva Yachts is offering a choice of either DNV-GL or RINA classification.
