The sailing yacht Katana, her owner, and her crew are looking forward to favorable winds and seas this summer. The yacht is on her maiden voyage, still in Italian waters at press time but pointing her bow toward other shores for the coming weeks.
Every superyacht requires years of design and construction, with Katana experiencing some delays. Her build began prior to the pandemic, under Perini Navi’s former ownership. However, when the company declared bankruptcy in 2021, work stopped. The build process restarted in 2022, shortly after The Italian Sea Group acquired the brand. On a related note, The Italian Sea Group rededicated Perini Navi exclusively to sailing superyachts. The yard had constructed a few motoryachts in the decade leading up to the bankruptcy.
Restarting construction allowed this sailing yacht to celebrate her launch in December. Like a number of the builder’s previous projects, Ron Holland is responsible for the naval architecture. In fact, Katana is the fourth delivery in the Perini Navi 60-meter (197-foot) ketch series, whose prior deliveries are Seahawk, Perseus³, and Seven. She’s additionally entirely aluminum in her hull and superstructure. The Italian Sea Group did introduce a few changes to the design, though. For instance, historically Perini Navi yachts have had aluminum masts and booms. The yacht Katana employs carbon fiber. In fact, the shipyard tapped Southern Spars for the needs. Carbon fiber further comprises the bowsprit. Yet another new feature, she employs dynamic positioning, therefore allowing her to avoid using her anchor.
Throughout the construction process, the owner and Rémi Tessier collaborated for the interior design. Images aren’t available, but the overarching look and feel is restrained luxury. Katana accommodates a party of 10 people, who can enjoy interior and alfresco lounges when the yacht’s sails are on full display.
“The delivery of Katana marks another step forward in our Perini Navi relaunch project,” says Gianmaria Costantino, The Italian Sea Group’s chief commercial officer. “With this yacht, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence.”
