A celebration took place during the last days of November at The Italian Sea Group’s shipyard in Marina di Carrara, Italy. The sailing yacht Katana, which shares her name with that of a Japanese sword, lowered into the water as the newest Perini Navi.
Going by her hull number, Perini Navi C2239, while under construction Katana is the fourth in a series. Specifically, it’s the Perini Navi 60-meter (197-foot) ketch series, whose prior deliveries are Seahawk, Perseus³, and Seven. Seahawk saw delivery in 2013, Perseus³ followed two years later, and Seven splashed in 2017. Katana’s construction had begun under Perini Navi’s former owner, but halted when the company declared bankruptcy in 2021. The build restarted in 2022, when The Italian Sea Group dedicated the brand solely to sailing superyachts.
The all-aluminum ketch bears styling and naval architecture from Ron Holland. The masts, booms, and rigging, though, are entirely carbon fiber, for their strength-to-weight ratio. Perini Navi’s in-house department redesigned the sail-handling systems to ease operations and increase performance.
Yet another change from her sisterships, the yacht Katana has a version of dynamic positioning. Briefly, thrusters and navigation equipment coordinate to keep her in a specific position, therefore avoiding using her anchor.
Although few details are available about the interior design, Perini Navi says that the owner worked with Remi Tessier. The accommodations for 10 people, from staterooms to lounges, reportedly reflect discreet sophistication. They additionally combine contemporary and classic elements. Overall, Katana has a volume of is 491 gross tons.
“The launch of this extraordinary 60-meter yacht is a milestone that fills us with pride,” says Giovanni Costantino, The Italian Sea Group’s founder and CEO. “Perini Navi will continue to stand out for its distinctive style and ability to innovate without sacrificing tradition.”
The owner of the yacht Katana, who previously sailed aboard another Perini Navi, will take delivery in the new year.
