Even though it will be held a year from now, the next Phuket Invitational Superyacht Rendezvous is already generating excitement. That’s because the organizers of this famous megayacht race have teamed with the people behind another celebrated competition, the Superyacht Cup (see here and here).
A few things motivated the joint venture. First, the Superyacht Cup, which attracts dozens of the world’s largest sailing yachts, has been looking into ways to draw motoryachts. The Phuket Invitational, which just celebrated it seventh anniversary, includes both types of yachts; having Feadship as one of its major sponsors certainly helps in this regard.
Another factor: adding a new cruising ground to the Superyacht Cup circuit. It already includes Palma and Antigua, and between Phuket’s unspoiled nature and its renowned Amanpuri Resort, where the Invitational’s social activities are held, megayacht owners and crew will get to explore another emerging region. “Asia’s servicing infrastructure and facilities have expanded considerably over the last five years and now offers the high level of service and provisioning that some of the world’s most elite clientele have come to expect, as well as a spectacular and exciting array of destinations to discover,” says Adam Frost, the director of the Phuket Invitational Rendezvous.
The Superyacht Cup Phuket, as the Invitational will now be called, will include a three-day regatta. Specifics on the islands included in the racecourse haven’t been released yet, but I’ll be following the story over the coming months. In the meantime, I’ll have an update on the just-held Phuket Invitational later this week.
