Imagine having to create a boat out of pieces of paper and sticks, then literally blow it across a “sea” of water, all the while racing against others doing the same. Then imagine stimulating racing–real racing–between two famous megayachts.
These were among the highlights of the 10th-annual Superyacht Rendezvous hosted just before Christmas at the Chedi resort on the famous Andaman Sea. It’s a chance for megayacht owners, their guests, and their crew to mix and mingle as well as to promote Phuket as a destination for the yachts.
As François van Well, president of Feadship of America (Feadship is a regular sponsor of the event), says, “It’s to reach out not only to the Asian yacht owners, but also to the Western yacht owners that might see this as a future destination.” Ultimately, he adds, the hope is that they will feel “more confident seeing similar yachts out here and having agents local here that can assist them with all of the technicalities, the paperwork, the provisions, the fueling, and everything else.”
This video showcases some of the friendly competition during the races as well as the general genial atmosphere.
