During a private ceremony yesterday, a select group of people gathered at Perini Navi’s Picchiotti site for the launch of Fivea, a stylish sloop. The launch marks the 48th yacht in the Italian yard’s history and the third in its 45-meter (148-foot) series created with Ron Holland.
Even though all three yachts in the 45-series have steel hulls with fine entries, there are differences among them. Helios, for example, which launched in 2007, includes a sunbathing area aft on the flying bridge and helm forward. Her predecessor, the 2006 launch Heritage, does not feature the sunning spot, so her twin helms are aft. As for Fivea, she’s modified in two ways. First, she contains twin Caterpillar C18 ACERTs in her engine room. Heritage and Helios both have a single Caterpillar C32 diesel engine. In addition, Fivea’s superstructure has a few more modern touches, for looks and aerodynamics.
The sail area, encompassing nearly 1,200 square meters (almost 13,000 square feet) is impressive, as is the 51-meter-high (167-foot-high) mast. Perini Navi made the seven captive reel winches controlling the sail and the electric furlers for the in-boom furling system for the main sail. Fivea is expected to achieve a 13-knot cruise speed. Scaled back to 10½ knots, she should see a range of 4,000 nautical miles.
Given her 9.73-meter (32-foot) beam, she should keep the owner and guests comfortable, amid a traditional interior decor created in-house. While Perini Navi hasn’t stated the number of staterooms or passenger capacity for Fivea, Heritage and Helios can accommodate up to 12 people. The yard did state, however, that Fivea’s staterooms are set up in a flexible arrangement, permitting, say, use as lounges adjacent to another stateroom.
