Tansu Yachts’ name may be unfamiliar to many Americans, though for long if recent history is any indication. Project Tigershark One, whose build contract was signed this month, is poised to further put the Turkish design-studio-turned-yard on the global megayacht map.
Tansu Yachts is owned by Riza Tansu, who has a strong background in industrial design. He established the company as a yachting design studio in 1985, providing interior design and styling services. Tansu’s signature style is forceful yet not overly aggressive. Tansu Yachts expanded into building to its own designs in 1996, to take advantage of Turkey’s growing presence in yacht construction. It’s based in Kanlica, on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorous. Troy Explorer, at 77 feet (23.6 meters), was the first launch in 1998. Nine more projects followed, though mostly smaller than that, until 2010, when Ceylan came. At 115 feet (35.2 meters), she marked the entrance into the megayacht market, which has been the focus ever since. Two megayacht deliveries have occurred this year, for example, with one, So’Mar, leading directly to a new yacht order thanks to her being exhibited at this past September’s Monaco Yacht Show.
As for Project Tigershark One, the LOA is 125’10” (38.4 meters). Build time should be 18 months. Tansu Yachts does not state what her build material will be, though it’s interesting to note that the yard specializes in both cold-molded wood and aluminum. Her profile, seen above, embraces the same styling notes as other projects designed and/or built by Riza Tansu.
The megayacht’s project name stems from her engineering platform. Riza Tansu says the Tigershark platform has been in development for several years. Unfortunately, there are no other details available about performance. Given the yard’s previous deliveries, we anticipate moderate speeds. Recent deliveries, for example, see a reported top end around 16 knots and a reported cruise around 13 to 14 knots. The only information thus far revealed about the Tigershark platform is that there’s a flexible general arrangement, allowing buyers different configurations.
Project Tigershark One was signed a few weeks after another new build, Cyclone. She’ll measure 141 feet (43 meters). She’s the contract generated directly as a result of So’Mar, mentioned above. One highlight: an upper-deck owner’s suite with a private alfresco area.
