The five-stateroom King Baby will be the focus of festivities later this month at IAG Yachts. Having recently launched, she’s being formally presented to the media and other invited guests at a special event. At 140 feet LOA, she is the largest megayacht the China-based builder has signed so far.
Started in 2012, King Baby is the successor to a same-named 100-footer from Hargrave Custom Yachts. (And in case you’re wondering, the owner is not the owner of the King Baby jewelry company. But, there is a connection. The yachtsman is a good friend of the firm’s proprietor and got a blessing to use the name for his boats.) This King Baby bears styling by REDS, naval architecture by Hydro Tec, and interior design by Evan K. Marshall.
King Baby started out as an IAG Yachts proposal termed the IAG 135. As that model name suggests, the LOA was 135 feet. She grew to her current length of 140 feet within a few months of the contract signing, as sometimes happens.
While we don’t yet have details on the interior design, we suspect that King Baby might reflect the rock ’n’ roll atmosphere prevalent aboard the owner’s previous yacht. She was adorned with a number of photos of famous rockers, including Keith Richards and Debbie Harry. Regardless, Evan Marshall of the eponymous design firm says the owner and his wife had quite particular ideas that held the bar high for his team. In addition, IAG Yachts stated early on that the master stateroom would be impressive. It’s expected to have far higher headroom than normal.
King Baby should achieve a good turn of speed, too: 21 knots at top end, under MTU power.
