Increasingly, modern megayacht owners are not content with cruising the tried-and-true routes. They’re venturing to farther-flung places, where sometimes their yacht is the only one in sight. That’s what the owner of La Familia has been doing. Thanks to him and his crew, we’re getting a vicarious sampling of what it was like to explore Indonesia.
Delivered in May 2015, La Familia is an Amels 180. She spent time in Europe last year and headed to Southeast Asia earlier this year. While she’s been using Singapore as her base, she’s ventured a variety of places. Actually, that’s an understatement. “In 10 months, we have covered more than 16,000 nautical miles,” Capt. Mike Rouse comments.
Among the highlights thus far are Komodo National Park in Indonesia. La Familia, with accommodations for 12 in the owner’s party and 14 crew, cruised it in March.
Komodo National Park is in the center of the Indonesian archipelago. It has three large islands and thousands of smaller ones, all being volcanic. Komodo National Park is further a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here’s how UNESCO describes it:
Komodo National Park is a landscape of contrasts between starkly rugged hillsides of dry savanna, pockets of thorny green vegetation, brilliant white sandy beaches and blue waters surging over coral, unquestionably one of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Indonesia. Demonstrating exceptional natural beauty that is all the more remarkable as a counterpoint to the dominant lushness of vegetation which characterizes vast areas of forested Indonesia, and with which most of the world associates the archipelago. An irregular coastline characterized by bays, beaches and inlets separated by headlands, often with sheer cliffs falling vertically into the surrounding seas which are reported to be among the most productive in the world adds to the stunning natural beauty of landscapes dominated by contrasting vegetation types, providing a patchwork of colours.
Judging from this video, everyone aboard La Familia enjoyed as many adventures above the water as below it while in Indonesia:
