Two currently consistent developments in yachting are: (1) more Americans are buying, and (2) more buyers want to travel, extensively so. These influenced the creation of the Mondomarine M42 Atlas project. Designed with Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect, the globetrotter is tailored to U.S. owners. She’s further capable of crossing the Atlantic to Europe and back, with fuel left over.
Measuring 137’7” (41.98 meters), the M42 Atlas is meant to take 10 passengers on the adventures they so desire. Besides tapping Marshall’s expertise, Mondomarine relied greatly on input from Northrop & Johnson, its U.S. representative, plus that of owners and crew. Marshall describes the megayacht as ideal for active owners or families. The idea is to “get to a spot and get everything in the water in 15 minutes,” he says.
As for “everything,” the M42 Atlas totes a plethora of toys, far more than the norm for her size. There’s a 27’5” tender, several PWCs, a three-person sub, and a handful of inflatables. Diving and fishing gear can be aboard as well. The sub stows aft on the main deck, in an area transformable to a swimming and sunning spot after it’s in the water. It lowers into the water via a crane that’s part of the bulwark, too.
The aft-deck pool is one of two aboard the M42 Atlas, with the other forward on the sundeck. Marshall says families increasingly want a place for “the kids to go nuts while the adults have lunch.” The grown-ups can do so at a table just a few steps away from the aft pool.
Families and friends can gather for informal breakfasts in the galley, too. Should buyers want more of a commercial kitchen, of course, Mondomarine and Marshall will comply. Should buyers also like spoiling guests, two adjacent cabins below decks convert to a full-beam VIP. (Beam is 28’2”, or 8.6 meters).
From the crow’s nest to the beach club, the steel-hulled M42 Atlas offers plenty of options for relaxing. And as mentioned above, she offers plenty of range. At 10 knots, under Caterpillar power, she should see a 6,200-nautical-mile range. Fuel capacity: 19,813 gallons (75,000 liters). Top speed should be 14 knots.
The M42 Atlas should take 24 months to build from contract signing.
