American megayacht buyers are the ideal customers for the Fast Displacement XL-300. So says Van Oossanen Naval Architects, one of three design firms behind the project. No mere concept, the proposal is fully studied and ready for sale—and build.
In fact, the U.S. office of Ocean Independence holds the central agency for the design. Niels Moerke of Van Oossanen Naval Architects says an American focus was logical. “With her Bahamas draft, high and efficient speed capabilities, and high comfort levels while sailing, she is the new sweet spot for the American market.” The XL-300 measures 155’8” (47.5 meters) and has a total interior volume beneath 300 gross tons. Typically, yachts of that size are closer to 500 gross tons. The XL-300 should also top out at 29 knots, yet see 3,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Power comes from twin 2,600-hp MTUs.
The XL-300 draws upon the studio’s patented Fast Displacement Hull Form. The “XL” means there’s great flexibility in length beneath desirable gross-tonnage levels. This translates to more space with lower operational costs and less arduous regulations. As Perry van Oossanen explains, “It gives the possibility to create the longest yachts ever within the 200, 300, or 500GT boundaries.” In fact, the XL-300 shows “it is possible to have a 45+-meter yacht, reaching close to 30 knots, with a six-foot draft, for less than 300GT.” Furthermore, he says, you gain 30 to 40 percent alfresco space and 10 percent interior areas with just a 20-percent length increase.
As for the XL-300, styling comes from Federico Fiorentino Yacht Design. Fiorentino himself penned the “aggressive attitude” to complement the power of the hull design. Furthermore, he strove for smooth lines to complement the alfresco atmosphere, like the aft-deck infinity pool.
For similarly contemporary chic appeal, Cristiano Gatto Design will work with the eventual buyer for the interior. Four guest staterooms can go below decks, with the expected main-deck location for the master. Six crewmembers can stay aboard as well.
Shipyard selection is up to the buyer. Construction is suited to all aluminum, as well as either ABS or Lloyd’s classification.
