Flying-bridge yachts aren’t just sporty in profile. They traditionally have sporty speeds, too. If you’re among the first buyers of Princess Yachts’ latest such model, you should enjoy top speeds approaching 33 knots. She’s the Princess Y85, joining two existing models in the Y Class series, the Y88 and Y78.
The reported 33-knot top end (at half load) is expected from the more powerful engine option. While twin MANV12 diesels are the choices, it’s a matter of about 100-hp difference. With the standard engine choice, you should still see close to 32 knots. Longtime Princess collaborator Olesinski designed a deep-V hull that should be 13 percent more efficient than previous same-size Princess hulls.
The 84’5” (25.75-meter) Princess Y85 amps up style, too. Princess and Olesinski paired for the first time with famed Italian design studio Pininfarina for styling. The megayacht combines the sporty flair expected of a flying-bridge model with sculpted curves. Also note the significant size of the glass along the main deck. Further on the main deck, unlike some similarly “small” semi-custom models, she has teak caprails, a teak-lined aft deck, and teak stair treads.
A surprise awaits buyers inside. The Princess Y85 lets you choose between formal separation of the galley and social spaces and one large open floorplan. A sliding door and electrically dropping divider over the bar can close off the galley, for instance. But, for foodies and self-styled chefs, you can keep both open and entertain your guests with your skills.
Given the yacht’s 20’7” (6.3-meter) beam, you can entertain comfortably in a few areas. For instance, the flying bridge has a barbecue and wetbar, along with seating and sunpads. The hardtop has louvers to let in light if you so wish, too. At the bow, meanwhile, take in sunsets and cocktails thanks to sunbeds that convert to settees, and opt for a low table as well.
All four staterooms, including the full-beam master, sit below deck. You and your guests will rest easier knowing the Princess Y85 automatically comes with a two-year “Princess Lifeline.” Provided in partnership with MedAire it covers a host of medical emergencies, plus provides 24/7 access to travel-safety and medical staff.
