Tim Charles, Crescent Custom Yachts’ current owner and the grandson of the brand’s founder, has been around boatbuilding his entire life. His understanding of new construction as well as refit and repair convinced him to create a new yacht by revamping one started by another builder. He found his ideal project in a 105-foot (32-meter) hull laying in Florida with two unused MTUs. With the input of the naval architect and designer Greg Marshall and his team, Charles transported the hull to Crescent Custom Yachts’ British Columbia yard and completed the yacht on spec. The resulting Crescent 117 should entice serious interest among those seeking their next adventure now.
Built to ABS standards, the hull had seen construction in Italy for Destiny Yachts. With a solid fiberglass bottom and cored areas above, the hull had both the construction techniques and performance characteristics that Charles required. Careful analysis of the laminate schedule and hull condition ensued. So, too, did obtaining a new warranty on the MTU engines.
Marshall’s studio came onboard to revitalize the megayacht’s look and ensure the integrity of all structures existing and new. Together, the shipyard and design team retooled the deck and superstructure. They gave her contrasting blackened hull windows and vertical pillars, for a clean, modern look.
Charles worked with Marshall to develop a contemporary, elegant style for the Crescent 117’s interior. Black oak cabinetry contrasts nicely with lighter-toned stone surfaces. It does the same with the fabrics, textured walls, and overhead panels. Di-Noc wrappings, which are synthetic architectural finishes, appear as well. Interior highlights include a teak-stump coffee table with burled patterns and integrated lights. The Crescent 117 additionally shows off ultra-sparkly Gorve Collection lighting above the glass dining table. It features cubic zirconia embedded in acrylic.
Debuting at the Seattle Boat Show in January 2020, the Crescent 117 garnered a lot of attention. Besides liking the full-beam master suite with a king bed and large hull windows, potential clients were surprised by the on-deck double cabin. Accessed through the galley, it’s the only stateroom not below decks. An athwartships VIP stateroom and a twin cabin join the master down there.
Further featuring an opening hardtop, plus seating for eight or more on a raised mezzanine in the pilothouse, the Crescent 117 promises a swift ride. The twin 2,735-hp MTUs reportedly allow a top speed around 27 knots and cruising speed of 20 knots. She even comes with a 17-foot (5.2-meter) Carbon Craft custom tender.
Currently for sale through Northrop & Johnson, the Crescent 117 has classy modern styling with universal appeal. The combination of her construction, abundant amenities, and competitive pricing ($13.5 million) should make her even more appealing.
