To provide crossover yachts with unexpected features tapping into how cruisers prefer spending time, Lynx Yachts has partnered with Dragoni Design Lab. They have created the Orion yacht concept, a 97-footer (29.5-meter) whose name evokes the mythological hunter, and whose shapes reflect those of the famous constellation. Additionally, the primary focal point onboard isn’t even on the yacht. Orion focuses your gaze aft over the transom toward the sea.
Michele Dragoni of Dragoni Design Lab was one of the original principals of Hot Lab. He therefore earned a reputation for thinking differently and more creatively. For the Orion yacht concept, he thought of how the constellation’s trapezoids “are joined along one side to create an evocative play of shapes,” he explains. These were the starting points for where the superstructure, especially the wheelhouse, and the hull come together.
The 24’6” beam (7.5 meters) megayacht keeps with Lynx Yachts tradition by having an extended aft area for stowing toys. Unusually, though, a 20-footer (6-meter) stows here with a hidden davit, and on an aft platform versus the main deck. Equally unusual, the Orion yacht concept situates aft-deck seating as upside-down Ls, so that guests will face aft. It may sound strange, especially since the tender is fully aft. However, Dragoni and Lynx Yachts ensure nothing obstructs your view. Plus, with the tender launched, you gain additional space for relaxation, turning the two levels into “a theater facing the sea,” as the designer says.
When you wish to spend time inside, the Orion yacht concept delivers an open space plan. In fact, Lynx Yachts says the area from the forward lounge to the aft deck offers unimpeded views and equates a tennis court’s length. The recommended layout includes an upper-deck, panoramic dining area with a skylight. It can be an indoor-outdoor area, too, thanks to sliding glass. Forward, meanwhile, the wheelhouse comes equipped with wing stations and side-deck access to the bow. Guests can use the side decks as well, to reach the cozy seating area tucked against the house.
