Cloudy skies had no impact on emotions the day that Kokoro came out of her build shed at Moonen Yachts. A name that refers to the heart, mind, and spirit, Kokoro belongs to an owner who is a longtime follower of the Dutch shipyard.
The yacht, a.k.a. Moonen YN199, started on spec, with the owner signing the contract earlier this year. The 118-footer (36-meter) caught his attention for a few reasons. He had seen Brigadoon, for instance, which bears the same styling and overall design. Styling is by Rene van der Velden, a longtime partner of the shipyard. Naval architecture, meanwhile, comes from fellow Dutch company Diana Yacht Design, in conjunction with van der Velden. Moonen and its partners conceived the project to offer buyers a steel-hulled megayacht in a size and volume dominated by fiberglass yachts. “This yacht gives me and my family so much room for relaxing and enjoying the water,” the owner explains.
In fact, one particular area onboard Kokoro promises to be the place where they’ll spend a lot of time. “I absolutely adore the winter garden and love the spacious layout of the sundeck,” the owner says. The winter garden is what most yachts of this size offer as an enclosed skylounge. The difference here, though, is a set of folding glass doors, which make the lounge much more of an indoor-outdoor space than typical.
Overall, Kokoro has accommodations for 12 people in six staterooms, along with cabins for seven crewmembers. Since the interior planning started before the owner stepped in, the shipyard had teamed up with Studio Indigo. The two had enjoyed a successful relationship with Brigadoon. Studio Indigo’s spec design called for a light, casual, and contemporary look. We do not know yet what changes, if any, the owner requested.
Regardless, upon delivery by the end of the year, the owner can look forward to far-flung cruising. Hailing from the Middle East, he can put an impressive 4,000-nautical-mile range to good use.
