Next summer, owners as eager to experience bluewater cruising as they are to design their ideal yacht will start ticking destinations off their must-visit list. They’re building what Baltic Yachts is calling a Baltic 78 Custom yacht for their family.
The owners have been hands-on and decisive since they began speaking with Baltic Yachts last fall. Among the reasons they chose the Finnish shipyard, it specializes in lightweight composite construction. This lends itself well to strong performance under sail. It further lends itself well to the owners’ intentions. Multiple ports in the Caribbean and the Med are in their sights. Baltic Yachts’ track record with similarly avid bluewater cruisers is strong. In fact, the owner of the 177-foot (54-meter) Pink Gin (now Ravenger) put upwards of 25,000 nautical miles under her hull in less than six years. Numerous transatlantic voyages contributed to that.
The owners are collaborating with just-as-experienced designers. Specifically, Judel/Vrolijk has given the Baltic 78 Custom yacht her sleek, modern profile and engineering underpinning. Besides long range, the owners have requested ease of handling and healthy interior volume for leisure time. A lifting keel supports the dual needs of offshore performance and close-to-shore shallows. When anchored, a high-capacity battery bank will handle hotel loads for peace and quiet. Additionally, the sailing superyacht has a removable bimini for shade that also makes it easier to handle the mainsail when stowing it.

Meanwhile, for interior design, Design Unlimited is ensuring the family enjoys many of the same comforts of home. Specifics on décor aren’t yet available. Neither are the number of staterooms. But, the studio has previously joined forces with Judel/Vrolijk and Baltic Yachts, on both the above-mentioned Pink Gin and the Baltic 108 WinWin, a cruiser-racer.
While work continues on this project, the shipyard has a variety of other sailing superyachts on site. For instance, in recent weeks the Baltic 121 Custom launched (above). She’ll be the 13th delivery in the 100-foot-plus size range in a little over a decade. Next year, the first Baltic 107 Catamaran splashes.
