The owners of the fully custom Morgana cannot wait to step aboard and start sailing. The 100-footer (30.5-meter) just departed Southern Wind Shipyard in South Africa to meet them in their home waters of the Mediterranean. Morgana is not just a yacht for them to cruise aboard all over the world, but also a racer they want to top the podium.
Launching just six weeks before handover, Morgana features design by Nauta Design as well as Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. Since one of the owners is particularly enthusiastic about bluewater cruising, plus entering superyacht regattas, they selected bluewater-fluent Southern Wind Shipyard for the construction.
Mario Pedol of Nauta Design says “sexy, appealing design” plus “a modern, aggressive, and sporty look” outside was further important. Ensuring Morgana fulfilled these, while still being performance-oriented and a comfortable home away from home, wasn’t easy. “Achieving a perfect balance between these three—for us, fundamental—ingredients involved not less than 3,000 hours, from the initial design concept to the smallest detail of the interior and deck design,” he explains.
Southern Wind Shipyard “masterly executed” Morgana, he continues. The shipyard team is pleased with the results, too. “We’ve tested her by sailing in all weather conditions,” explains Marco Alberti, the general manager. “It was amazing how light she felt at the helm sailing at 16, 17 knots.” No matter what the condition, “I always felt in complete control.” A 6,867-square-foot (638-square-meter) sailplan, carbon-fiber construction, and a lifting keel contribute to her light-wind and racing abilities.
For livability while cruising, meanwhile, Morgana has a forward owners’ suite (above). The owners can enjoy a saloon/TV room upon entering the yacht from the cockpit. Two guest staterooms are aboard as well. Unusually, though, the yacht also has a tender garage, something rarely seen on sailing yachts.
