From February 16 to 20, boat buyers will descend upon Miami to attend the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show. Large-yacht buyers, meanwhile, will head for SuperYacht Miami, a separate show. The deep-water Yacht Haven Grande Miami at Island Gardens marina is hosting several notable motoryachts exceeding 80 feet (24 meters). At presstime, these yachts were set for SuperYacht Miami visitors to see.
Gene Chaser and Gene Machine
Two dramatically different yachts (above) from Damen Yachting show how the Dutch shipyard continues to attract both traditional cruising customers and those seeking support yachts. Gene Chaser is a Damen Yacht Support project, while Gene Machine is an Amels 180 Limited Editions design. Both are highly customized, too, for scientific discovery. In fact, Gene Chaser extends the scientific efforts of Gene Machine. Gene Machine remains a family-friendly global cruiser, even with a saloon-turned-science lab that led to the development of a coronavirus detecting test. The two megayachts will be in the SuperYacht Miami area of the show, at Yacht Haven Grande at Island Gardens Marina.
Kimberlie
Exhibited by Worth Avenue Yachts, Kimberlie is a 2010 delivery from IAG Yachts. You might recognize her original name, which was Primadonna. Regardless, this 127-footer (38.71-meter) underwent a thorough redesign in 2019, with glossy hardwood soles and abundant custom wood cabinetry. That cabinetry and other modern touches extend into the galley and throughout the six staterooms.
Thunder
Exhibited by IYC, Thunder gained fame for styling by the late Jon Bannenberg and speeds of nearly 50 knots at sea trials in 1998. These days, the 164-footer (49.99-meter) hits a slightly more sedate 35 knots. There’s nothing sedate about her interior, though. An extensive makeover from 2015 to 2016 saw Cavalli Visionnaire—famed designer Roberto Cavalli’s brand—transform the interior into a lavish fantasy world for her then-owner. Even though she’s under different ownership now, much of that opulent, over-the-top décor remains.
If you prefer to visit SuperYacht Miami after the Discover Boating exhibits, you can still find megayachts at the latter. They include the 125-foot (38-meter) Azimut Grande Trideck, the Ocean Alexander 30R, the Custom Line Navetta 33, and the Sanlorenzo SL106.
Separate tickets yield access to the Discover Boating displays and SuperYacht Miami. Tickets for the latter start at $125 and include tender service to the marina.
