The 129-foot (39-meter) motoryacht My Saga sank nine nautical miles off Calabria, Italy on August 20, several hours after the crew made a distress call and attempts to tow the yacht to shore were unsuccessful.
According to the Italian Coast Guard, it received a call from the megayacht’s crew the evening of August 20. My Saga was en route from Gallipoli to Milazzo, Sicily. The crew indicated she was taking on water at her stern. Two patrol vessels therefore headed out to her location, in the Gulf of Squillace in the Ionian Sea. The Italian wire service ANSA reports that one Coast Guard vessel rescued four passengers and one crewmember, transferring them to the nearby town of Catanzaro Marina. Three additional crewmembers and the captain remained onboard.
ANSA additionally reports that a tug arrived around dawn the following morning to rescue the remaining personnel. The tug intended to tow the motoryacht My Saga back to shore, too. However, weather and sea conditions grew worse. Plus, the yacht was further listing dramatically, as the Coast Guard’s video footage reveals. The tug’s crew determined it was impossible to save the yacht. The tug did, though, take on the remaining yacht crewmembers and captain safely. The motoryacht Saga sank around 1 p.m. local time.
Italian authorities are investigating the cause of the sinking.
Cantieri San Marco built the yacht in 2007, as Yuko, on behalf of Monaco Yachting & Technologies. Monaco Yachting & Technologies was a Monaco-based brand responsible for just this one new-build project. She had accommodations for 12 in the owners’ party and eight crew. Styling was by Tim Heywood.

Purchase in 2022. New crew that didn’t know how to operate emergency pumps ? Watertight design failure or human error ? Insurance job ?
The yacht flooded and sank at a incredible speed.
How deep is it where it Sank ? For that kind of dough it will be lifted (salvaged)and investigated I’m sure.

More than 12 hours passed between the initial distress call and the sinking, with three crewmembers and the captain remaining onboard that entire time to try to keep her afloat and safe. The waters where she sits are apparently relatively shallow, though the Coast Guard has not to our knowledge specified the exact depth. Regardless, an investigation is ongoing.

Hi there
A friend of mine owns a Salavage company that would like to determine the exact location of the vessel where it sank in order to work out if the depth is within working scope. They would like to offer to remove the fuel onboard for conservation purposes
Any info would be gratefully appreciated
Dave
Yes hi my friend also owns a salvage company and he too wants to know the exact coordinates so he can remove, um, fuel for “conservation purposes”. Thank you.

She was up for sale for a long time. Luxury yacht like My Saga need a “perfect storm” of events to occur in order to sink these days. So far, there’s zero evidence of collision or severe weather conditions. Even if she was taking on water, why weren’t the pumps operating? We haven’t heard the last of this “saga”. I’m definitely betting on a insurance fraud investigation.

Regarding the weather conditions, videos from the Italian Coast Guard do show wind-driven swells. In combination with the severe listing angle, that may have been too much for the pumps. The investigation continues regardless.
