At 108 feet (33 meters), the Ocea Commuter 33 yacht is the entry-level model in the French builder’s Commuter series. But, Ocea Yachts asserts she is no less capable of carrying you and your guests on long voyages, including global travels.
The Ocea Commuter series honors early-20th-century looks. Specifically, the series echoes the spirit of the well-known commuter yachts that New York titans of business used to travel to their Manhattan offices. Ocea Yachts believed the low-profile looks and the idea of traveling in style, a timeless concept, would appeal to current yacht owners. It further believed it could engineer a series of designs for transoceanic cruising. Ocea Yachts found a like-minded customer with the owner of Abely Wheeler, a 107-footer (32.5-meter). Abely Wheeler became one of the first Ocea Commuters in 2004, for a yachtsman who wanted to cruise the world with his family. Not only did they do that, but also the yacht has completed a few circumnavigations to this day. (The yacht has changed hands since delivery and presently bears the name Alexandria.)
Naturally, the Ocea Commuter 33 yacht picks up on these principles, plus updates the current lineup. She preserves the low profile, going further by eliminating the upper deck. The yacht still has a flying bridge, however, plus it’s mostly shaded.
Eric Truphème, a broker with Ocean Independence, has sold a similar-size Ocea Commuter, Paolyre, twice since her delivery took place in 2008. He attests to the design’s long-range engineering, comfort and stability underway, and intended handling with a small crew. The Ocea Commuter 33 yacht is for a crew of four, plus an owner and guest count of eight. She also should see a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. “With their semi-displacement aluminum hulls, which are lighter and ride higher in the water, they can comfortably cruise at 14 knots, whereas competing explorer yachts top out at 10 knots,” Truphème points out.
The shallow draft of about six feet (1.9 meters) furthermore affords poking into shallow bays and coves. Once there, the Ocea Commuter 33 yacht’s crew can offload watertoys, or guests can spend the day swimming. Yet another option is to set up sunlounges on the protected foredeck, where a RIB alternately can stay. Come nighttime, restful sleep takes place below decks. (Ocea Yachts leaves interior design to owners and their choice of designer.)
One final option: ice classification for the hull. Regardless, “the Commuters are for people who want to be out cruising!” says Truphème.
