There’s nothing quite like seeing a superyacht hull under transport. Usually, it happens by barge, on the water. In the case of the WiderCat 92 hulls—two hulls, since she’s a catamaran—the transport took place on land. Trucks carried the twin hulls to the Wider Yachts’ newly opened shipyard in Fano, Italy.
The WiderCat 92 is the flagship of the builder’s hybrid-powered catamaran series. The Wider Yachts catamarans sell exclusively through MarineMax stateside. Notably, two of the five Wider Yachts catamarans currently in build are for the American market. Styling is by Luca Dini Design in collaboration with Wider’s in-house team. The WiderCat 92 hulls contain two staterooms apiece, while the master stateroom sits on the main deck. The master is quite roomy, too, commanding about half of the 1,076 square feet (100 square meters) of usable space on the main deck. Making the guest cabins more special, two have opening platforms connecting them to the yacht’s beach club.
Now that the two WiderCat 92 hulls are at the Fano shipyard, craftspeople can continue installing systems such as the hybrid propulsion. An in-house development, it’s based on a system that Wider premiered eight years ago. It’s now adapted to multihulls and relies on electricity from solar panel-fed batteries as well as gensets. It allows for full-electric mode, among other options.
The system isn’t just for propulsion, though. In fact, it can power the WiderCat 92’s hotel load, with Wider’s own power-management system keeping control. So, for instance, if the batteries run low and the genset has to come on, the power-management system has software to optimize rpm and therefore consumption. Additionally, any unused produced power goes straight back to recharging the batteries.
The next several weeks should see the catamaran’s deck and superstructure arrive, since they’re in build, too. Wider Yachts says the yacht’s launch remains on schedule for this summer as well.
Anticipate seeing the first WiderCat 92 at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. She’ll make her international debut there, in fact.
