Are two hulls better than one when it comes to big-game fishing? StellarPM and an avid angler believe they are. They’ve developed the SF2603 sportfishing yacht, which will be the first in the StellarSF (“SF” meaning “sportfishing”) series.
The platform draws inspiration from the StellarCat AL2503 platform, a twin-hulled cruising motoryacht. She’s therefore an entirely aluminum trideck, though with higher-horsepower engines. (Speed is a requisite for sportfishermen, to get out to the fishing grounds and back for weigh-in swiftly.) Chris Holmes, StellarPM’s principal and founder, say the project is the result of a customer request. In fact, the client “wanted a more stable and comfortable base boat than a traditional monohull sportfisher could offer.” Additionally, the buyer wanted “superyacht luxury,” to enjoy time aboard with friends and family when not fishing off Florida and in the Caribbean, Belize, and Nova Scotia.
With naval architecture from Ginton Naval Architects, the SF2603 sportfishing yacht should perform well regardless of fishing or cruising. Twin Volvo Pentas with IPS drives should allow a swift cruising speed of 19 knots and a range of 2,400 nautical miles a few knots slower. Because the IPS drives are 35 percent more efficient than traditional shafts, and twin hulls are more efficient than monohulls, the super cat will make better use of her 5,200 gallons (19,680 liters) of fuel.
When the owner lands a big fish, hydraulic transom doors will permit reeling it into the cockpit. The cockpit, by the way, will be 473 square feet (44 square meters). Of course, it will have fishboxes, livewells, and an ice-slush machine for keeping the catch fresh. A bait-filet table and freezers will be here, too. Further freezer and stowage compartments, including for rods, reels, and tackle, will all be within reach as well.
Additionally featuring a tuna tower, the SF2603 sportfishing yacht will meet Lloyd’s +100A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 classification. Future customers will have a choice of classification society and standard for their projects.
Holmes hints at one final noteworthy feature: “We are currently working on the development of a foiling solution, which could well take the max speed up to 35-plus knots.”
